Specialist Upholstery Cleaning
Professional Microfibre Sofa Cleaning in London
Microfibre looks easy to clean but the care code determines everything. Use water on an S-coded sofa and you get permanent tide marks. We check the label first — every time.
The Care Code Is Everything
Why Microfibre Needs the Right Method
Microfibre is a tightly woven synthetic fabric — typically polyester or a polyester-nylon blend — with fibres far finer than a human hair. That density is what makes it soft and stain-resistant, but it also means the wrong cleaning agent causes irreversible damage. The care code on the manufacturer's label is not a suggestion; it is the only safe guide to which method to use.
View our full sofa cleaning serviceW — water-based cleaning only
Hot-water extraction or a water-based upholstery shampoo is safe. The fibres can tolerate controlled moisture without stiffening or tide-marking.
S — solvent-based (dry) cleaning only
Water will cause the fibres to stiffen and leave white tide marks as it dries. Dry solvent must be used. This is the most common code on microfibre sofas and the most commonly ignored.
WS — either method is safe
Both water-based and solvent-based products are suitable. We choose based on the type of soiling — water extraction for general grime, dry solvent for oily or greasy marks.
X — vacuum only
No liquid of any kind. Vacuuming and dry brushing only. Rare on sofas but important to identify before any product is applied.
What We See
Common Problems on Microfibre Sofas
Water rings from DIY cleaning
The most common problem we see. A well-meaning clean with a damp cloth or upholstery spray on an S-coded sofa leaves circular tide marks that are difficult to remove once dry.
Body-oil patches on arms and headrests
Skin oils transfer to microfibre over time, creating dark, greasy patches on armrests and the top of the backrest. These do not respond to water — they need solvent pre-treatment.
Pet hair embedded in the pile
Microfibre's fine weave traps pet hair below the surface. Vacuuming alone rarely removes it fully. We use specialist tools to lift embedded hair before cleaning.
Flattened or matted nap
Heavy use flattens the microfibre pile, making the sofa look worn and dull. Brushing the nap after cleaning restores the soft, even texture.
Food and drink stains
Coffee, juice, and food marks are common. The correct pre-treatment depends on the care code — water-based stain remover for W-coded fabric, dry solvent for S-coded.
General dulling and soiling
Dust, skin cells, and airborne grease accumulate in the pile over time, dulling the colour and making the fabric feel less soft. A full clean restores the original appearance.
Know Your Fabric
Microfibre vs Natural Suede — What Is the Difference?
Microsuede is a synthetic microfibre fabric engineered to look and feel like natural suede. Both have a similar napped surface, but they behave very differently when cleaned.
Microfibre (synthetic)
Polyester or polyester-nylon blend. More durable and stain-resistant than natural suede. Care code varies — W, S, WS, or X. Responds well to dry solvent on S-coded fabric.
Natural suede
Split leather with a napped finish. Water causes permanent staining and stiffening. Dry-clean method only — specialist solvents and suede erasers. Nap restored after cleaning.
Assessment First, Always
How We Clean a Microfibre Sofa
Every microfibre clean follows the same sequence. The care code determines the method; the condition of the sofa determines the pre-treatment.
Care code identification
We locate the manufacturer's care label — usually under a seat cushion or on the base frame — and confirm the code before unpacking any equipment.
Colourfastness test
A small hidden area is tested with the chosen cleaning agent. If the dye is unstable, we adjust the product and tell you before proceeding.
Pre-treatment of stains and problem areas
Body-oil patches, food stains, and water rings are pre-treated with the appropriate product — solvent-based for S-coded fabric, water-based for W or WS.
Main clean — dry solvent or water extraction
S-coded sofas are cleaned with dry solvent applied and removed without introducing moisture. W and WS-coded sofas are cleaned with controlled hot-water extraction.
Nap brushing
After cleaning, the microfibre pile is brushed in one direction to restore the soft, even texture and remove any residual flattening.
Inspection and drying advice
We walk through the result with you before leaving. Dry-solvent cleans are ready to use almost immediately; water-extracted sofas typically need one to three hours to dry fully.

Common Questions
Microfibre Sofa Cleaning — FAQs
Why does my microfibre sofa have water rings after I cleaned it myself?
Most microfibre sofas are coded S — solvent-based cleaning only. Applying water causes the fibres to stiffen and leaves tide marks as it dries. We check the care code before selecting any product to prevent this.
Can you remove the water rings left by DIY cleaning?
In many cases yes — dry solvent treatment can lift water-ring residue and nap brushing can restore the texture. Results depend on how long the marks have been there and how the fabric has dried. We assess the sofa before we start and give you an honest view of what is achievable.
Is microsuede the same as microfibre?
Microsuede is a type of microfibre fabric designed to mimic the look and feel of natural suede. Both are synthetic and both require care-code checking before cleaning. We treat them using the same code-first approach. Natural suede is a different material entirely — split leather — and requires a different cleaning method.
How long does microfibre take to dry?
For S-coded sofas cleaned with dry solvents, drying is near-instant and the sofa is ready to use almost immediately. For W or WS-coded sofas cleaned with water-based extraction, drying is typically one to three hours with good ventilation.
Do I need to move the sofa before you arrive?
No. We work around the sofa in situ. We ask that cushions are accessible and that the area around the sofa is clear enough for us to work safely.
Which areas of London do you cover?
We cover central and inner London, including Kensington, Chelsea, Mayfair, Marylebone, Notting Hill, Fulham, Battersea, Islington, and Hampstead. Contact us to check availability in your area.
